START SCORING

A tape measure. A little time. Your buck’s story.

You do not need a record-book buck to enjoy learning how antlers are measured. This tool is for hunters in Texas and beyond who want to understand their measurements—not compare the value of their memories.

Original 4E measurement schematic. Not to scale; it illustrates measurement types, not the exact location of every measurement.

  • Use inches, recorded to the nearest 1/8 inch. Right and left mean the deer’s own right and left.
  • Have the antlers in hand. A photograph alone cannot supply reliable measurements.
  • Have someone experienced check broken, missing, split, or unusual points before relying on a total.

Build your score

Measurements stay in this page while it is open. They are not submitted to 4E or stored as a lead. Reloading clears them.

Step 1 of 5 • Inside spread

1. Inside spread

Measure the widest inside distance between the main beams, perpendicular to the skull’s centerline. Do not use outside width or tip-to-tip distance.

Understand the numbers

Gross is not the same as net

Our frame estimate adds the credited spread, both beams, normal tine lengths and eight circumference measurements. Abnormal-point inches are listed separately. The total including extras adds them back without applying symmetry or other deductions. Net scoring needs the rules of the particular scoring system and careful point classification.

Spread credit has a limit

The calculator caps inside-spread credit at the longer main beam. Extra-wide spread does not automatically mean every inch contributes to the total.

A fresh measurement is provisional

Fresh antlers can shrink as they dry. Formal scoring programs may require a drying period and an approved measurer. A home measurement does not become an official record simply because it was entered into a calculator.

Does an eight-point buck still have four mass measurements per side?

Yes. Enter all four circumferences on each side. Missing tines change some measurement locations; they do not mean you should leave out the mass.

Can this tool score a buck from a trail-camera photo?

No. It calculates measurements you provide. Perspective, distance and hidden antler surfaces make photo estimates uncertain.

Can I use this number to choose a hunt package?

Ask 4E how the individual ranch defines its packages. Point limits, antler measurements and included accommodations vary. This calculator does not set package prices.

Does the score tell me the buck’s age?

No. Antler score alone does not establish age. Nutrition, genetics, conditions and maturity all influence antler development.
